Of Course, IT Matters!

The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn’t think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.    -Steve Ballmer

A world without IT is a world full of inefficiency, misery, discontentment and slow progress. If you were to ask me, does IT matters? I will answer you with a big YES! IT does matter!  This trimester, we’ve been bombarded with many concepts, learning and reminders that awakened our senses and made us feel that “HEY!”, we are in the technological advancement era. We need to plan, change, renew and improve our business strategies and ideas suited to the demands of the market for us to gain competitive advantage.

In every class discussion that we had, it broadens my horizon and understanding of how Information Technology eases the burden of handling complicated and quite impossible things like how FedEx and UPS deliver millions of letters and packages every single day efficiently and effectively. For organizations to attain business success, it’s time to leverage the benefits of IT in this digital age.

One of the many arguments we had is that, should an organization outsource IT security? According to Prosenjeet Banerjee, “The outsourcing of information security makes sense to organizations that have a highly developed concept of risk.” Through outsourcing, organization can increase efficiency, be able to focus on core areas, save on infrastructure and technology, access to skilled resources, provide faster and better services. Management’s decision should be based on the necessity of the organization to outsource or maintain the internal IT security.

As a summary of all the discussions, IT is important in making a right, real-time decision making via MS Access or through other decision making tools, for making a niche in the global industry and expands its market reach, in ensuring customer support and satisfaction through Internet Technology, millions of existing and potential customers will be in our reach and of course, be able to manage Human Resources well that enables organization to adapt easily to Globalization.

Meanwhile, IT also poses threats to our society so be careful not to press the self-destruction button. It can be a disruptive technology which can result to a more serious damage and which may create a sudden ripple effect to society. That’s why we must exercise caution in handling technologies like this. More so, IT occupied a huge space in my heart. It created a venue for me to learn and see things beyond my knowledge. IT makes my life simpler by enabling faster communication with colleagues, friends and relatives, providing tools for more effective work, and giving me access to vast information with the click of a mouse. Everything we see around us, we owe them to the people behind the development of these  technologies who constantly innovate products and services that satisfies the wants and the growing needs of the society as a whole.

Improving Lives through Social Media

“Don’t use social media to impress people; use it to impact people.” -DaveWillis.org

Social Media plays a vital role in today’s society. Back then, we used to pray first before starting our meal but now we can’t eat without taking first a picture of the food we ordered and upload it on our frequently used social media site. This is the frequent scenario at present and we may sometimes experience it when we are with our “barkadas” and family gatherings.

When social media has not yet occupied its niche in the online market, it seems like people around the globe are not connected and progress is such a slow motion moving picture. Through social media, my eyes were open to endless possibilities that life has to offer. I’ve seen a lot of beautiful places in different parts of the world, celebrating joy and happiness of others through very unique themed events, seeing people connected and fulfilled in their lives. Social Media transfers information instantaneously in just a click! People are connected and information is passed on in series or maybe randomly. Thus, a social media user can be highly influenced and can embody the beliefs, character, culture and everything they’ve learned on the internet. But has social media helped us for our personal growth and development?

Seeing blogs on tumblr, tweets on Twitter, status on Facebook, posted pictures on Instagram, I am able to comprehend and realize that there will always be a bigger world out there, lots of opportunity and wider road to success!  I’ve been inspired to pursue my career, to study while having a job, to travel and go to places I’ve never been before, and to achieve whatever dreams and aspirations I have in life. Social media and internet give us an instant access to abundant self-uplifting quotes, spiritual poetry, personal writings, new skills and ideas. As I’ve encountered some of those posts on IG and Tumblr, it has triggered me to add up photography as the subject of my interest for my self-improvement and talent expansion. Every time we go on photo walk back then and capture every once in a lifetime experiences, beautiful places and cultural events, it made me feel accomplished, fulfilled knowing that my allotted time was very meaningful. Furthermore, through my photos we could connect and share our talents to other people and yeah, they could appreciate my work of art.

Let’s be a responsible social media user! Using social media too often will result to difficulty in socializing personally with others or can’t be able to communicate effectively because we become passive in a way that we only like typing or writing and we find it hard to speak fluently in the crowd. For that, let’s cut off our use of internet! Time is gold, it is precious and so does our money in paying our electric bills. Social Media has been created with a specific purpose. It is meant for connecting people, uplifting human spirit and improves everyone’s welfare through inculcating and solidifying a positive character in every internet user. Be an extrovert! Go on an adventure and live life the way you want it to be.

Software Piracy: How Can We Eradicate You?

Software Piracy is everywhere! Every time I stroll around the downtown area, I usually see sales ladies waving the pirated copies of movies, television shows, songs of your favorite artists, games and different software applications. Piracy is just common here in the Philippines. Many Filipinos actually engaged in this kind of business even though it has been sanctioned already by the government. It is unethical for a person to buy, sell and even make a duplicate copy of the intellectual property of others. But honestly speaking, we sometimes patronize pirated products since it is cheaper compare to the original ones and if not of the same quality at least it can be a good substitute.

The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting anti-piracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.  -Gabe Newell

Years before piracy was not yet the trend, we used to buy expensive original copy of movies and software applications. Not until technological advancement has taken place. Software Piracy has become rampant and the more people patronizing pirated products, the more it becomes less of an issue in our society. It is a well-accepted behavior since everybody is doing it already.  But ethically speaking it’s not! People who bought and sold pirated software are both liable. There will be no buyers if there are no sellers and the other way around. We are just humans! We want satisfaction that comes with a lesser cost. There will always be a dilemma between watching in cinemas or buying a pirated copy and downloading online. Yes, we can blame someone for using pirated software. If there’s a will, there will always be a way! It just depends on their priority if they want to buy original or settle in pirated copies but in the developing country like the Philippines only few are willing to buy original copy since they are not fully aware of the disadvantages and the effects of it to the developer or the people who really work hard and put on extra effort to develop a particular software.

Moreover, according to Republic Act No. 8293, the state recognizes that an effective intellectual and industrial property system is vital to the development of domestic and creative activity, facilitates transfer of technology, attracts foreign investments and ensures market access for the products. It shall protect and secure the exclusive rights of scientists, inventors, artists and other gifted citizens to their intellectual property and creations, particularly when beneficial to the people, for such periods as provided in the Act.

Yes! We have a concrete law in fighting against piracy. However, are these laws substantial enough to eradicate totally this crime?  The Optical Media Board (OMB)   is the government institution in the country that fights optical media piracy where there is a level of playing field for all legitimate players. The laws and its implementation are not that tight and it is not being taken seriously by the government. Software companies can do nothing about it but the best option is to really push the government to perform on its capacity by motivating them to eradicate piracy. This can be done through giving those incentives, rewards, bonuses and other extra compensation. It’s hard to stop piracy but with continuous implementation and effort plus the heavy penalty imposed by the government for the transgressors, I don’t think it’s impossible to exterminate them.

How can we actually manage knowledge? Well, I believe that every organization has its own human resources equipped with an abundant and overflowing knowledge and ideas. The tacit and explicit knowledge of the employees must be managed properly in order to encourage free flow of ideas, exchange of insights and foster learning to promote ones growth and development. Hence, in order to facilitate this, Knowledge Management (KM) must be put into practice.

When I was just a newbie in my organization, my senior employees and manager would tend to tell me stories about their past experiences either success stories or bad one. Those bad experiences   helped me to avoid committing future mistakes and I easily made a way out of that bad situation. Since KM allows the sharing of ideas, knowledge including experiences, it helps others to avoid that mistake that was once committed by the other employee. All organizations can benefit from their people sharing, innovating, reusing, collaborating and learning. It enables faster decision making wherein everybody gets involved in creating, formulating and devising ideas that eventually will be processed and become knowledge. Just as the recycling of materials is good for the environment, reuse is good for organizations because it minimizes rework, prevents problems, saves time, and accelerates progress. Through collaboration, it unites all diversities and brings the power of large numbers, different opinions and varied experiences to bear good decision making.

Sometimes, it’s hard to implement KM because of the “kanya-kanya” system that is happening inside the organization. Some employees are not sensitive to other people’s needs. Thus, it can be manifested in the performance of every branch what kind of people belong in it and if knowledge management is truly implemented in the organization.

Yes! Knowledge is power but knowledge sharing is empowerment. When you have great knowledge you can be powerful and being powerful alone doesn’t gain respect from other people and guarantee self-actualization. But when you share knowledge and expertise, you build people and hone them to be the best person they could become. And that is empowerment through sharing knowledge.

Building Future through Business Intelligence Tools

How can organizations encourage more effective use of BI tools?

Business Intelligence (BI) Tools plays a vital role for the success of every organization. In this competitive world at present, a business entity would be left behind without the reliance on BI Tools since it transforms raw data into meaningful and useful information for the purpose of business analysis. BI is most effective if the data comes from the combination of both the external (market in which a company operates) and internal (operations and financial data) environment because it provides a more complete picture.

The usage of BI tools has been a part of daily operations. It is a must for the management to make the best possible decisions because a single wrong move can either make or break the whole organization. Thus, it is important to inform all the employees about the effectiveness of the BI tools inside the organization. Through employees’ awareness about the BI tools, it can help them understand the benefits of it to the whole organization. Also, employees should know what is expected of them so they are motivated to use BI tools effectively. Encourage training and development among the employees. Provide them with opportunities and a venue where they could personally develop critical thinking needed for innovation and good decision making. It is essential to create a working atmosphere that enables opportunities to grow and developed.Management should provide continuous training to their employees so to keep them motivated and lessen turnover.

Moreover, another way of encouraging the effective use of BI tools is by developing shared culture where people value information. Everyone should value information the same way they value the entire organization. They should develop shared common culture so they can be able to work together for the goal of the company. Furthermore, Reward System is also vital to recognize those who have shared on the effective use of BI.  A reward-based system is essential so that there will be a proper basis of rewards and promotions and it will produce an outcome of happy delighted employees.

It is highly essential that in using Business Intelligence tools, it must create a positive experience or something rewarding and should not be punitive. Anyway, your employees are all professionals. They are more inclined to work with a rewarding atmosphere rather than being imposed on them. They should first realize the value of it to the organization so they may feel that it is essential for them to use it. On the other hand, if the usage of BI tools is a punitive program, it may result to something unrewarding like employees will feel you have tight control over them. Let them explore and realize the true value of BI tools inside the organization and they, themselves will totally imposed the usage of it.

I believe that in using BI applications, it will yield to a positive and highly productive outcome. Hence, employees who use BI tools are likely to exhibit good job performance since they can accurately predict outcomes, make good real-time decisions and create a good impression. Thus, it will be fair enough to pay raises based on their job performance. Thus, it creates a rewarding atmosphere inside the organization but also discretely imposing a punitive program.

“Let Your Fingertips Do The Work”

Shopping can be considered as one of the most relaxing task in the world. It is an activity in which a customer browses the available goods or services presented by one or more retailers with the intent to purchase a suitable selection of them. It is some sort of stress reliever for many where it can develop your analytical thinking ability in selecting the best products and services offered suited for your taste while having that excitement of carefully choosing the perfect fit for you.

Let’s all thank the genius minds who have brought us the shopping center at our home instead of going to malls. In modern days, consumer focus is transferred towards online shopping. This is the reason why online stores are booming business today. Online shopping stores like Lazada, Zalora, Armani Exchange, E-bay, Amazon and etc. has been delivering any kind of goods for several years now at the doorstep of every online shopper.

Online shopping can save both consumer’s time and fuel by just simply browsing over the internet and selecting items they wanted to purchase. It can also save energy; you don’t need to hop from one store to the other because as a consumer we tend to compare prices. Thus, from the site itself, we can be able to decide what products to choose and which brand is cheaper than the other. Also, consumers can be able to shop 24/7, anytime of the day and during at night, no closing time. Lastly, consumers can avoid waiting in long lines. Your chosen products will be added to your cart and it will be delivered outside your doorsteps after several days.

However, unlike buying at retail stores, you are not able to see the actual product itself and it might cause you inconvenience because the product delivered might be different from what you have expected. Online stores are only showing product description and photos of the merchandise, which can be a disadvantage for many online shoppers. Online shopping requires patience to wait for the item to arrive at your doorstep about 2 to 3 days or even longer depending on the location you’ve ordered it from.

I am also an online shopper! And through online surfing on Instagram, I was able to purchase lipstick, Tee shirts and other fashion apparels which I had no any hesitation in buying. These items are not that expensive and some are not available here in the city. On the other hand, I have second thoughts of buying gadgets, since I want to see the actual features and first hand contact with the product before buying it, beauty products (like whitening cream and soaps) because I need to make sure the product safety, if the product exhibits no side effects and also some shoes online because I’m afraid that it won’t fit. Furthermore, I don’t consider buying foods, medicines and jewelries online because these are highly sensitive items and expensive ones too.

Online Shopping is in! More convenient, more exciting and no sweat! Just let your fingertips do the work!

“WWW.Wild Wireless World”

What will the world look like if our cellphones, laptops, iPad, tablets and other gadgets you can think of are connected through a cable wire? Anywhere you go, that long cable will always be attached to your gadget for you to be able to send emails, text messages, pictures, music, and a lot more data and information. It’s quite hassle and annoying, right? If you’re too attached to typewriters like my mom, can you imagine bringing one everywhere you go just to type reports because your boss needs it immediately?
Human beings will always promote constant innovation and uplift everyone’s well-being. Through the years of research and product development, life has been a lot easier and convenient due to advent of the so-called wireless network technologies. A wireless network is any type of computer network that uses wireless data connections for connecting network nodes. At present, almost everything you see is wireless. One click and one touch, information is sent in a jiffy; less stress, less hassle, at a minimum cost and at a faster speed as possible. Examples of wireless networks are your cell phone networks, Wi-fi local networks and terrestrial microwave networks.

Wireless network technologies create an opportunity to communicate effectively within and outside of the organization, produce quality output and sell good services efficiently to consumers and people’s lives have been a lot easier as before. Through these technologies, you can conveniently type, search, email, socialize to your colleague, friends, acquaintances and even your bosses.
Various advantages of wireless networks have brought significant changes to the lives of every individual. Make sure that these technologies are well taken care of, for it to continue doing its purpose. Wireless networks are convenient but are inherently insecure. Therefore, we, as users, must exercise caution in connecting wirelessly. We should also be cautious in connecting to private networks because your information might be compromised. I was a victim of this scenario before but luckily, I was able to retrieve my FB account. Furthermore, in our little own ways like never saving our passwords on browser and like always checking the URL of any website we visit that involves personal information will make us a responsible wireless network technology user.

IT Security Outsourcing: Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down

Information technology outsourcing or ITO is a company’s outsourcing of computer or Internet related work, such as programming, to other companies. It is used in reference to business process outsourcing or BPO, which is the outsourcing of the work that does not require much of technical skills.

Many organizations at present are highly dependent and reliant to outsourcing firms since they cannot handle all aspects of a business process internally. Service providers can offer quality goods and services that a particular organization can’t provide or equate to. Through outsourcing, cheaper labor is highly available without compromising the quality of output and also they have that innate expertise in handling operations and transactions that are highly crucial to the company’s success.

Meanwhile, security issues are very alarming at present. Every company should be aware of the risk involved in outsourcing IT security. These include, risk of exposing confidential data and synchronizing the deliverables. There are certain aspects of the business processes that must not be handled by the outsourcer such as IT security particularly in the banking industry. Highly confidential data might be compromised and that will result to decrease client transactions, increase client complaints, filed charges against the perpetrators and eventually losses. On the other hand, outsourcing IT security in other businesses can greatly help their operations by way of creating systems and procedures to become efficient and effective in delivering goods and services to customers.
Moreover, if there’s a need to outsource, IT security outsourcer must handle only operations that have minimal risk involved inside the organizations like online advertising, marketing promotions and handling other technical operations.

Highly sensitive information must only be disseminated inside the organization. Outsourcing IT security depends on what level are you at and how IT is needed inside the organization. Risks are always involved in every step of the way but the responsibility lies on the shoulder of the top level management whether to outsource or not.

Applied Skills and Secrets for Effective IS Decision Making

What makes an organization successful is not only by how physical assets are being utilized, how big it generates profit every year or by how numerous their branches are. Human resources, I greatly agree, are the most valuable asset in any organization. They serve as the heart that pumps blood throughout the body and like the human organ, it gives life and meaning to the organization’s existence. These people (employees) , if guided properly by the right leaders (managers/supervisors), can greatly contribute to the organization’s success with proper motivation and incentives. Massive technical background about the subject matter is not a guarantee of generating an effective Information Systems decision.

However, I do believe that all organizations need to hire managers who hold extraordinary skills to improve performance of the employees and fill in the missing portions. Nevertheless, the skills that I’ve been emphasizing is the management and leadership skills that a manager should possess. It is one of the most important and the most difficult one because it takes a huge dipper of courage and a bottomless pail of patience needed to deal with different kinds of people at the same time.

Consequently, constant innovation is a prerequisite of success. An organization must also be sensitive and adaptive to the demands of the market so it can compete internationally and it can only be done by way of constantly innovating products and services provided to the customers.

In facing hard decisions, a manager must have that innate ability to decide what’s right and for the good of the organization as a whole. That’s why it’s best to have a manager that possesses critical thinking skills. It is when managers be able to properly address the existing problem calmly. Moreover, in my own opinion, good communication skills must be the number one qualification before becoming a manager. I’m not only referring to how well they speak the English language but it’s how they convey the message clearly to their subordinates or to those of higher ranks. He engaged in listening, how to manage stress in the moment, has the capacity to recognize and understand emotions of other people and those they’re communicating with.

I guess we don’t need highly technical people to do the job.  A skillful one will do but must be equipped with certain knowledge and competencies that’s qualified enough to make scholarly decisions.

Behind every successful organization, stands  hardworking employees that are being led by mostly competitive and skillful leaders. Success doesn’t happen overnight but it’s a result of continuous innovation and by the constant collaboration between managers and employees.

Information Technology: Can anyone live without IT?

(c) www.isiqiri.com

I wonder what the world looks like without computers, machines, gadgets and other electronic devices. I can’t imagine how people back then manage to survive an era of black and white, plain and boring moments of the night where all you can hear is the sound of crickets singing in chorus and where every job is done manually and requires great effort. Life has been a lot easier with the advent of technology. They said that love makes the world go round but now I should say that IT makes the world go round and a better place to live in.

IT has been a part of our daily routine. When I wake up every morning, I am already enjoying the product of technology. I used to grab my cellular phone, turn on the internet, start to surf whatever stuff that appears in it and plug in my earphones so I could start my day right. It’s like I have been attached to it and there’s no minute or hour that you can separate me from this gadget. During the time when cellular phones are not yet a trend, it’s hard to be flexible with your time. Meeting friends or colleagues should be personally set beforehand because there are no other easy means of wireless communication back then except of course you have a pager. Perks of being attached to this kind of  technology is that it makes you feel that you own the world because everything is now within your reach. Do you have that one question that boggles your mind? Well, Google or Yahoo! could answer that for you. You don’t need to go and look for libraries to check that info but instead information comes to you, in just a second you will find what you’re looking for.

On the other hand, many organizations at present shift from old operation system to new ones. They need also to be advanced and can adapt to the growing needs of the market so that they could not be left behind by other competitors. Before in my workplace, data and information are kept manually, printed in a sheet of paper resulting to a mountainous pile stored in the office. In every transaction, employees would make an extra effort to go over that file again. But at present, information technology greatly helps these kind of institutions to record, save and store data and information safely.

It now makes me conclude that the world without IT is like a coffee without sugar, a bread without peanut butter and a body without soul. You can survive without it but you can never be satisfied at all. It seems like years and years of continuous competition among biggest brands has led to a grand innovation of several technologies which results to an increased demand of the people. Yes! It made our lives easier and everything can be done in just a one click of a mouse and in just a snap of a finger. We can’t predict what the future may bring or what new technology will make us awe but one thing’s for sure, let’s all put to good use everything that has been blessed us with!
